The Australian Standard AS2699.3:2002
The Australian standard AS2699.3:2002 deals specifically with the durability of lintels. Recent changes to the standard dictate in broad terms the following:-

  1. Lintels should be marked with their durability rating (visible after installation).
  2. The durability rating to be used is dependant on the airborne chloride deposition rate of the building site.
  3. Lintels are to be designed such that there is no loss of function within a 50 year life.

All INGAL Lintels are marked with the durability rating which is stamped into the bottom face. In additional, a yellow sticker is applied which confirms compliance.

However, it is the chloride deposition and life expectancy which becomes difficult to ascertain.

A detailed corrosion map of Australia has been developed by CSIRO and Industrial Galvanizers Corporation to identify corrosion rates in Australian environments as well as chloride deposition rates. The data on which the maps are based can be continually updated once new data becomes available.

Assistance and Lintel Compliance Searches
INGAL Building Systems provides a service which indicates an areas likely chloride deposition rate, the expected lifespan and recommendation regarding minimum lintel durability rating. Should you wish to obtain a report on suburb or area in order to specify the correct product, send an email to the Product Manager at ibs@indgalv.com.au.
